The new "magic number" is 540 Defence.

Very nice tank gear list here: http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f97/39462-wotlk-tanking-gear-list.html

When you hit level 80 you can start to "champion" a faction by wearing their Tabard. Looked into it a bit but not too in-depth, looks like the best one initially for tanks will be Wyrmrest as they give the following rep rewards:

Honored: [Cloak of Peaceful Resolutions]

Revered: [Sabatons of Draconic Vigor]

Revered: [Breastplate of the Solemn Council]

And if you can be bothered getting to exalted, there's a nice red drake mount :-)

Have been in a few heroics. UK and Nexus were fine, but we had a shot at Gun'Drak last night and the snake boss was causing us problems. Got a set of tactics sorted and finally got him after 12+ attempts, but it basicaly came down to not having good enough gear. Getting hit too hard and not being able to DPS him down enough.  When i did the first UK heroic run I had only replaced 6 pieces of my tank set (which was far from the best L70 gear) so it is definitely manageable, but CC is required to stop the damage coming in.

wow-loot is updated and has all the warrior rewards from all the Quests and 5 mans including heroics. (Tank and DPS).

Server's down, I'm bored, so worked on a wish list which is:

Cloak: [Cloak of Peaceful Resolutions] Wyrmrest - Honored
Chest: [Breastplate of the Solemn Council] Wyrmrest - Revered
Boots: [Sabatons of Draconic Vigor] Wyrmrest - Revered
Ring: [Titanium Earthguard Ring] Crafted (Jewelcrafteing)
Ring: [Unsmashable Heavy Band] Utgarde Keep Heroic (Ingvar the Plunderer)
Gloves: [Daunting Handguards] Crafted (Blacksmithing)
Legs: [Special Issue Legplates] Argent Crusade - Honored
Neck: [Chained Military Gorget] Emblem of Heroism (25)
Helm: [Armored Titanium Goggles] Crafted (Engineeriing)
Bracers: [Bracers of the Herald] Ahn'kahet Heroic (Herald Volazj)
Shoulders: [Tempered Saronite Shoulders] Crafted (Blacksmithing)
Trinket: [Indestructible Alchemist's Stone] Crafted (Alchemy)
Trinket: [Sonic Booster] Crafted (Engineering)
Weapon: [Red Sword of Courage] Utgarde Pinnacle Heroic (King Ymiron)
Shields: [Titansteel Shield Wall] Crafted (Blacksmithing)
Gun: [Armor Plated Combat Shotgun] Crafted (Engineering)
Belt: [Waistguard of Living Iron] Emblem of Heroism (40)

Some of it is quite easy to get, others will require a lot of grinding/cash/lucky drops.  Ones in green I have already.

In most cases there are better items for each slot - but I thought these ones were achieveable and would give me a solid base for starting to raid. Engineering goggles are once again, Uber, it seems :-)

Not sure if anyone else here reads Elitist Jerks, but
http://elitistjerks.com/f15/t36969-wotlk_-_heroics_thread/

"The last boss of Gun'drak is a nightmare...People who go into this instance with a crittable tank are going to be very disappointed as he will crit tanks for upwards of 25k."

Ouch!

More on-topic:

"Heroic gear doesn't seem to be a pre-req for Naxx, which by the sounds of things is allowing Blizzard to tune them (or at least their optional challenges) to be quite hard, without blocking progress. (At least that's what I'm picking up from people). This is good news for people who have less time for raiding and see Heroics as their main endgame." Sounds to me like Trogg's list including Heroic loot should be a very solid starting point.

Managed a clear of Utgarde Peak on Heroic this afternoon. (Even got the gauntlet achievement :-)  Took us 3 tries on the first boss - but only cos on the first two tries we were going for the achievement where you have to get the boss to kill an Abomination :-).  One shotted the second boss.  Took around 5 or 6 tries on the gauntlet whilst getting a set of tactics that suited and learning it. One shotted King Ymiron.

Sadly, King Ymiron didnt see fit to drop the nice tank sword on the list above :-(

Wearing the Wyrmrest Tabard and now halfway thorugh honored. So 6000 rep more and I get 2 more upgrades from rep.

Also only 2 badges away from the Cloak. (although was thinking of trading them for Frozen Orbs for the craftable stuff I need, but figured i might get lucky in heroics getting them).

My DEF is happily crawiling towards the magic 540 mark though - now at 513.

did some more heroics - replaced some gear - got to revered with Wyrmrest and got the 2 tank pieces - spent 25 badges on the neck - levelled alchemy to 400 and got the trinket. Going to work on engineering next - will no doubt cost a fortune as it always does.

Defense now at 521 (getting there) and over 23K hp unbuffed.

Got engineering to max level, crafted the engineering stuff I wanted on the way. Got most of the stuff on my list and only 2 pre-Wrath items left (Belt and Bracers).

Now over 25000 hp unbuffed and at 533 Defense. Pretty much ready to go raiding. (although would rather DEF was capped before starting)

The helm is BoP engineering btw so no use to the rest of us.

I just got [Helm of the Ley-Guardian] from the last boss on normal Oculus but sure there is something better to come.

Sorry - was more of a personal wish list than a general one. I added the links to the sites i used for people to make their own choices.

A good alternative helm is the one which drops from Grand Magus Telestra in Heroic Nexus: [Arcane-Shielded Helm]
